SUMMARY:May 4 Board of Supervisors Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains and many other community organizations for public comments at the May 4 meeting of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. During their 4pm meeting\, the BOS will debate the instructions to the staff regarding changes in the zoning ordinance affecting the Mountain Overlay District. \nThere are proposals to weaken the protections for the mountains\, including reducing the setback for mountain streams from 300 to 100 feet\, increasing the amount of land that can be bulldozed without a permit\, and allowing an unlimited number of private parties and events at mountain vineyards. We will have tee shirts for everyone to wear with the message Protect Our Mountains. \nThe meeting begins at 4pm but the public comment period does not begin until 6pm.  To register to speak\, you must call the County Administrator’s office on Friday May 1 beginning at 8:30am. DESCRIPTION:May 14 – Land Use Workshop \nOn Wednesday 14\, Save Rural Loudoun\, Bluemont Historic Village and The Snickersville Turnpike Association will sponsor a Land Use Workshop at the Bluemont Community Center. \nThe workshop will show how rural landowners can generate income from their land including qualifying for lower real estate taxes from farming and open space easements; grants to plant trees and protect slopes; and conservation easements. SUMMARY:May 3: Native Plant Sale at Clifton Institute
DESCRIPTION:Spring Native Plant Sale \nMay 3 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm \nNative plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. The afternoon will feature music by Shenandoah Valley favorites Keith Dill and Kevin Slick\, and catering by Jordan Springs Market BBQ. George Ohrstrom of Clarke County will offer a presentation on the growth and impacts of data centers in Northern Virginia. \nSince 1998\, Bingol has covered land use and transportation issues in Loudoun County\, focusing on helping people make positive impacts on their communities.  “Loudoun County and its iconic Blue Ridge Mountains have faced many conservation challenges over the past few decades\, and through each one Gem has been there to help communities navigate them\,” said Friends founder and board member Carole Napolitano. “She is so deserving of this honor!” \nTickets are $75 per person\, and includes dinner and beverages.
