Mills Kelly will bring to life nearly a hundred years of Appalachian Trail hikers at the Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains’ Annual Celebration, October 15 from 6–9pm at Good Spirit Farm Winery.
What did those hikers eat? What kind of gear did they carry? Why did they go hiking in the first place? What was their relationship to the natural world they found along the trail? What was it like to hike as a woman, as a person of color, as someone with a disability? And how did all those things change over the 100 years of the trail’s history? Mills will share tales from “A Hiker’s History of the Appalachian Trail,” to be published October 8.
The event also will feature Keith Dill and Sam Hall, two award-winning musicians with deep roots in bluegrass, old-time, Irish and jazz music. We will present our annual Friend of the Mountains award — to be announced the week of September 22! Wine from Good Spirit will accompany yummies from Savoir Fare Catering.
President Peter Weeks will share a short perspective on our efforts in zoning enforcement across our service area, updates on our scholarship program, and perspectives about the future of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
