Three Counties, One Permit: Clarke Calls Out Concerns Over Loudoun Resort
A New York-based developer is proposing to build a “boutique resort” complex near the intersection of Route 50 and Blue Ridge Mountain Road, within a few hundred yards of the Appalachian Trail. Preliminary plans call for 40 guest rooms across two buildings, an 88-seat full-service restaurant, and a spa.
The property is located in three counties – Loudoun, Clarke, and Fauquier, although all of the construction will be in Loudoun County – at least the phase I construction. While the developer has mentioned a possible phase II and phase III, the plans for those phases have not been made public.
There are numerous environmental, safety, and traffic concerns associated with the project, and many citizen groups in each of the three counties have expressed strong reservations. However, because the construction will not be in Clarke or Fauquier Counties, only Loudoun County has a direct role in permitting for the project. Permits from Clarke or Fauquier are not required.
In November, David Weiss, Chairman of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of the full Board, sent a letter to Phyllis Randall, Chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, expressing the concerns of Clarke County residents with the project. As of mid-February, Chair Randall has not responded to Chair Weiss’s letter.
